The Lobster Roll Sandwich

"Say, what the heck is a lobster roll sandwich?" Basically, this culinary wonder consists of freshly made lobster salad stuffed into a hot dog roll; the perfect lunchtime repast on a summer's day! There are many variations and styles of making this sandwich. Up here in the Northeastern United States, the most common version of this sandwich is served cold, although I have had a warm version in which the lobster meat is drenched in drawn butter. Here's my recipe for the Lobster Roll Sandwich:
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Mayonnaise
2 tsp Dijon Mustard
1/3 cup Celery, diced
1 TBS fresh Lemon Juice
1/4 tsp Old Bay Seasoning
3 cups cooked Lobster Meat, cut into bite sized chunks
6 Hot Dog Rolls
Cooking Procedure:
Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl
Mix well
Stuff the lobster salad into the hot dog rolls

Absolutely FANTASTIC! I was just a "LUNCH" over the weekend and fell in love with there $25.00-wow-lobster rolls. Your recipe was a big 10 in my book. The best rolls do use with your recipe I found are potato hot dog buns lightly buttered and put under the broiler for less than a minute. I also added a bib lettuce leaf to the inside of the bun. Thanks for the smiles!
Glad you liked the recipe! I agree--a potato hot dog roll under the broiler works great for this sandwich. Thanks for stopping by the website, chefjp
No, no, no, and.....NO! I grew up and live in New England. Lobster salad stuffed into a roll is NOT a lobster roll. A true, traditional New England Lobster Roll is nothing more than a top sliced, grilled-in-butter hotdog roll, lots of lobster and tons of melted butter. That's it. No more.
Lisa, I can appreciate your feelings about the "purity" of your New England version of the Lobster Roll but here in Long Island this is the way folks like it. I've had the New England version and it's a great nosh as well! As my Mother-in-Law says, "That's why there's menus in restaurants." Thanks for stopping by the site! chefjp
Though this thread and comments are now totally dated, I felt compelled to comment on Lisa's comment...
Lisa...you're wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. While New England does have a tradition of offering fresh lobster drawn in butter on a roll as another traditional lobster roll, what is described on this site is just as traditional. Lobster rolls are one of my favorite foods on earth, if not my favorite, and I have made a mission of trying all sorts of lobster rolls in New England. How you can say that the 'lobster roll salad' on a roll is not traditional when it is offered at hundreds of places throughout New England...are all these New Englanders wrong?
Hey Kelly--- Thanks for your comments on my Lobster Roll post--- Lisa's comments are a good example of how some folks just get it in their head that some things can only be enjoyed one way and one way only, eh? chefjp
