Lobster Roll aka "Lunch"

Over the years during the summertime, I've spent a considerable amount of time in the Eastern part of Long Island.  Besides enjoying the beautiful scenery, the search for quality food is usually on my mind.  One of the great destinations for a lunchtime nosh is The Lobster Roll; otherwise known by the locals as "Lunch".  Most folks are drawn to this eatery that's just outside of Amagansett, New York by one thing: the lobster roll sandwich!  "What's a Lobster Roll sandwich?"  Well, it's a hot dog roll stuffed with chunks of freshly made lobster salad.  Sounds yumbo-licious, don't it?

This cool little joint, which gets its nickname from a large sign on its roof that says "Lunch", started out as a little clam bar.  Located along a highway known as the "Nepeague Stretch", it was originally owned by Arthur and Ann Spies.  In 1964, they sold the business to Richard C. Terry and his son, Frederick. Over the years the Terry clan has expanded the place to include both indoor and outdoor dining. In addition to that delectable lobster roll sandwich, the menu at "Lunch" features such items as fresh schucked clams, steamers, chowders, fried puffers and steamed lobsters along with an array of signature desserts.

The food evokes the best culinary traditions of Long Island; good, simple seafood that stands on its own merits. This ain't no chi-chi joint so you probably won't see Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan here.  In contrast to the celebrity driven hubub of the surrounding Hamptons area, the Lobster Roll restaurant has a down home charm that's reminiscent of days gone by.  On a hot summer's day, I usually mistake it for paradise.
